Science

Reminder your infomercial for your Unnecessary Products are due on Wednesday, Jan 30. This is a strict deadline as you have had ample class time, as well as a weekend. Please have your commercial ready for viewing on Wednesday. Can't wait!

Your Science Test on Mechanical Systems is on Thursday, Jan 31. Use the review document for a list of everything to study. Remember you are allowed a formula sheet made in advance.

Grade 8 CTF Choice Round 2

Grade 8 CTF Choice Round 2
Take some time this weekend to think about the following choices for CTF-A and CTF-B. You will be making your selection on Monday.
CTF- A OPTIONS (Day 2 and Day 4)
1. Band A:Band A is for Band students were previously in Band B. Please select Band for all three choices of CTF-A.
2. French A:French A is for students who were previously in French B. Please select French for all three choices of CTF-A.
3. Documentary Film Making:Students will have the opportunity to examine the techniques behind the production of documentary films. We will be watching a variety of different documentaries on topics ranging from Science to Current Events to History, and they will have an opportunity to independently create a documentary about a topic that interests them.
4. Computer Programming:In this CTF option you will build on your programming skills. We will use the Scratch program to develop a basic understanding of programming. We will move from a basic level to and intermediate level and end with an advanced level. If time permits we will look at using other programming programs.
5. Interior Design:Calling all HGTV fans! In this class we will explore the world of interior design! We will play around with furniture layouts, different styles of design, budget limitations, colour theory, feng shui, tiny houses, and more! We will do some research into the history and origins of different design styles and look at how to merge some of these together. Come ready to draw, shop and create!
6. Outdoor Education:In Outdoor Ed. students will develop and demonstrate the attitudes, skills, and knowledge required for responsible participation in a range of outdoor activities. During this CTF students will be exposed to a number of leadership and team building activities. We will be partaking in a variety of outdoor activities that will teach us skills that enhance our outdoor experience.
7. Fashions:In Fashions this term we will learn a variety of basic skills including how to read a pattern, thread and use the sewing machine. There will be some choice in these projects depending on your skill level. We will also look into how culture influences fashion. Many fashion trends and styles have emerged from different cultures around the world. We will look into clothing from around the world and explore how values, culture and religion influence how people dress. As we learn about that person’s culture we hope to understand why their clothes are designed a certain way.

CTF-B OPTIONS (Day 1 and Day 3)

1. Band B:Band B is is for Band students who are currently taking Band A. Please select Band B for all three choices of CTF-B.
2. French B:French B is for students who are currently in French A. Please select French B for all three choices of CTF-B.
3. Creative Technology:Have some fun being creative with technology. In this CTF we will focus on using many different programs in technology to show our creativity. Some of the things we will do are:
Website design (creating our own websites for different purposes)
Photoshop (enhancing photos, adding extras into photos, creating funny face, etc.)
Audacity (having fun with digital songs or audio recordings)
iMovie (producing movies)
Yearbook (helping with creating the yearbook pages)
4. Culinary Arts:You know it, you eat it. Now you will cook it. This will be a student led class, with students coming up with the recipes, sharing them with each other and of course, cooking!
5. Community Connections:This class will work on developing skills that would help you in careers where you care and support people. In the first part of the term we will connect with a Seniors’ Centre in Scenic Acres, and learn some games, conversation skills, and strategies for communicating with limitations. The second half of the term will involve preparing some activities, games, or crafts for kindergarten students at Tuscany School and Eric Harvie and several visits to implement these. This class involves several off site trips to these locations and some of them will need to begin during lunchhour on Day 3s to accommodate this.

Students will continue to develop their proficiency using a wide range of tools and media to explore and deepen their understanding of the elements of art. In addition to creating their own pieces, students will also analyze and critically respond to the work of experts, peers and themselves.

Tomorrow's Field Trip

A reminder that we have our field trip to Café Daughter tomorrow! 

Please don't bring a full lunch that will take more than 10 mins to eat. We will have two 10 min snack breaks- make sure you bring enough food so you won't be hungry, but that you can finish in those times.

Tomorrow CTF day

Reminder of the field trips we will be taking tomorrow!
CTF Day: Fri. Jan. 18th. Students will be spending the whole day in a CTF experience. All Band students will be going to a rehearsal with Ms. Hierons, the Sports Performance class will be going to U of C, the Creative Tech, Visual Arts and Photography classes will be going to ACAD/SAIT and the French and Foods classes will be participating in activities here at the school. 
Please dress appropriately for the activity and the weather. We will be back at school by 12:30 for 12:40 dismissal. ACAD/SAIT students reminder to bring money for snacks if you wish.

Science

In Science, both classes have started a group project to design and build a model of an unnecessary machine. The best part is they get to make an informercial to promote their device using the machine evaluation criteria we have been looking at in class. This project will require some materials from home and it due on Jan 29th.

Hi 8-3 and 8-4 families!

Just wanted to connect to pass on some info about upcoming trips for the Grade 8s!

1. Alberta Theatre Projects- Cafe Daughter: field trip forms came home yesterday or today for this trip. We will be going on Jan. 24. Please email us if you have any questions about this!  We will be looking for a few parent volunteers so please let us know if you are interested in coming!

2. CTF Day: Fri. Jan. 18th. Next Friday students will be spending the whole day in a CTF experience. All Band students will be going to a rehearsal with Ms. Hierons, the Sports Performance class will be going to U of C, the Creative Tech, Visual Arts and Photography classes will be going to ACAD/SAIT and the French and Foods classes will be participating in activities here at the school. Applicable field trip forms for this day are also coming home today. Thank you for your paperwork patience!

3. Math: Students started multiplying integers with the aid of a number line. They noticed that when the signs were the same the product was positive and when the signs were different the answer was negative. 

4. Science: We are continuing our Physics Unit looking at formulas to calculate Work and Mechanical Advantage.
